Rat arthritis In another in vivo study (Castano et al. 2007) we investigated whether LLLT using an 810-nm laser could have a therapeutic effect in a rat model of inflammatory arthritis caused by zymosan injected into their knee joints. In this model the severity of the arthritis is quantified by measuring the diameter of the swollen joint every day and plotting a time course for each joint. We compared illumination regimens consisting of a high and low fluence (3 and 30 J/cm2), delivered at high and low irra- diance (5 and 50 mW/cm2) using 810-nm laser light daily for 5 days, with the positive control of conventional corticosteroid (dexamethasone) therapy. As shown in Figure 12 three of the illumination regimens were effec- tive in reducing the mean integrated knee swelling almost as much as the positive control of the powerful steroid, dexamathasone; these were 3 J/cm2 delivered at 5 mW/cm2 and 30 J/cm2 delivered at 50 mW/cm2 both of which took 10 minutes, and 30 J/cm2 delivered at 5 mW/cm2 which took 100 minutes. The only ineffective dose regimen was 3 J/cm2
