CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE Night Eating Syndrome: Diagnostic Criteria NES was originally defined as the consumption of greater than 25% of daily calories after the evening meal, insomnia at least 50% of the time, and morning anorexia (Stunkard, Grace, & Wolff, 1955). Nearly 40 years passed before these criteria were revised by Stunkard and his collaborators. In 1996, these criteria were suggested: evening hyperphagia (operationalized as at least 50% of one’s total daily caloric intake after 7:00 p.m.), difficulty sleeping, and morning anorexia (Stunkard et al., 1996). Throughout the years, many definitions of NES have been utilized making it very challenging for researchers to study this disorder in an effective manner as well as impeding the recognition of NES as clinically significant (Alison et al, 2010). Thus, diagnostic criteria for NES were revised at the First International Night Eating Symposium (April 26, 2008, Minneapolis, MN) (Allison et al., 2010). As a result, proposed research diagnostic criteria for NES were proposed and are presented in Table 1. 2PDF Image | BRIGHT LIGHT THERAPY FOR late NIGHT EATING SYNDRome
