Introduction V. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Light therapy, in this study, showed to be an effective modality for use with pain in acute lower extremity sprains and strains. Swelling did not have the same effect. Interpretation of the Results While both conditions were affected, pain seemed to be affected more than swelling. Table 3 showed the decrease in pain from day to day and showed that the experimental group had a definite decrease over the control group although not significant because of low sample size. Swelling was only significantly affected on the second and third days and that difference was an increase in swelling rather than a decrease. Potential Applications of the Findings It appears from this study that the more beneficial reason to use light therapy would be for pain control rather than swelling control. It begs the reader and researcher to delve more deeply into what is happening at the nervous system level rather than the cellular or tissue level. What is physiologically happening in order to control the pain threshold over cell metabolism? This needs to be examined further in future studies. 27
