Figure 3: Structure of the Sun (World Book, 1987) Calculations indicate the sun has a life span of less than 10 billion years of which 4.6 billion have passed. At the end of its lifespan, the Sun will start to fuse helium into heavier elements and begin to expand, eventually growing to such an extent that it will swallow the entire solar system. The sun would then become a ‘Red giant’. After millions of years this giant will then shrink and become what is known as a ‘White Dwarf’. This is the dying phase of the sun as it gradually cools over the next trillion years (Hamilton, 2004). 2.2 The Atom 2.2.1 Structure of the Atom In order to see how light can be created we must first understand the basic nuclear principles of the atom and its makeup. The easiest way of picturing the structure of an atom is to think of a miniature solar system. The nucleus (central core) of the atom corresponds to the sun in the solar system. The rest of the atom is mostly empty space dotted with minute, almost weightless, negative charges called electrons. The electrons correspond to the planets within the solar 10PDF Image | THE USE OF LIGHT AND COLOUR AS A HEALING MODALITY
