← The drainage pipes are carefully singed on the open fire before they are connected to each other – welding the Nepalese way. It takes getting used to, but it works. Two Swiss plumbers travel to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, where they stay with Nepalese colleagues for a week and experience normal everyday life Nepal-style. The building site is located 20 minutes outside Kath- mandu. “Craftsmen in Nepal travel to building sites us- ing public transport,” says an amazed Armin Kellen- berger as he squeezes his way onto the full bus. His Nepalese colleague Bhu Bikram Angdembe is carrying the tools in a rucksack. Everyone aboard – then off they go! During the journey, cheerful Nepalese pop music booms from the speakers on the bus. Different standards Having arrived at the building site, it quickly becomes clear that flexibility is needed: “Everything is a lot less coordinated than in Switzerland. Only when you arrive on site does it become clear what work can now be car- ried out,” says Adrian Brühwiler, describing his impres- sions. Building owners procure the materials them- selves, and not always on time. Together, the plumbers lay the pipes that route fresh water into a tank on the roof. As the thermometer rarely falls below zero in the Kathmandu region, the pipes do not need any special insulation. “Being able to simply attachthepipesalongtheouterwallmakesthepro- cess very efficient,” says Adrian. The pipes run from the tank down into the building – to the kitchen, bath- room and toilets. “The pipe diameters used everywhere here are as large as the supply pipe leading to a sin- gle-family house back home. Due to the small slope between the tank and the taps, the pressure in the pipes is not very high,” summarises Armin. Great hospitality The Kathmandu Valley is inhabited by around three mil- lion people – and rising. Traffic jams are a normal every- day occurrence. And it is loud to boot. The roads in res- idential areas are not paved. As it is still the rainy season, there are puddles everywhere. Armin and Adri- an are staying with Padam Sunuwar. Padam has a small plumbing business. Bhu Bikram is his neighbour. He came to Kathmandu from a small village in order to find work. He has been learning the basics of plumbing from Padam for six months. Padam lives with his wife and daughter in a one-bedroom flat. The two Swiss plumb- ers are staying in the bedroom with two beds, and the family is sleeping in the other room, which also con- tains a kitchenette. Meals are first served to the guests in their room. Only then does the family eat – in the oth- er room. Professional education in an early stage A visit to the training centre where Padam learned the basics of his craft is also on the agenda. The Swiss aid organisation Helvetas supports such centres in order to give the poor and disadvantaged a better chance of finding employment. At 46 percent, youth unemploy- ment is very high in Nepal. The training providers’ pay- ment is linked to the success of the courses. The sys- tem is working: three years after successfully completing their training course, 71 percent are still employed or – like in Padam’s case – have successfully started up their own business. ← Geberit & Helvetas In 2010, Geberit’s Swiss sales company and Helvetas entered into a partnership aimed at improving the drinking water supply and access to sanitation in developing countries. In seven years, they have provided around three million people with access to water and basic sanitation. ↑ The Swiss installers are astonished about the unusual installation methods of their Nepalese colleagues: a water supply pipe is mounted on the outer wall of a building. 15
