The Riffelalp Resort is located 600 metres above Zermatt on a natural, sun-kissed plateau. The view of the countless Alpine peaks, especially the top of the world-famous Matterhorn, is simply breathtaking. However, the interior of the freshly renovated five-star hotel also leaves nothing to be desired. ← An unbroken view from Riffelalp onto the Alps – including the Matterhorn – with the five-star resort’s rooftops and heated outdoor pool in the foreground. “The idea of operating a five-star hotel that offers every imaginable comfort at 2,222 metres above sea level and far away from the nearest road might seem quite auda- cious at first,” says Hans-Jörg Walther, who refers to himself as the “hut warden” at the Riffelalp Resort. “But thanks to our unique location and proximity to the Gornergrat railway1, everything is working out a treat. The logistics for our hotel are not just chal- lenging, but also cost-intensive,” he adds. Renovation of old and new The Riffelalp Resort comprises several cleverly connected wooden chalets as well as an older five-storey stone building. The chalets are linked to one another via corri- dors and are all built on a large base build- ing that houses the reception area, restau- rants, wellness centre, recreation rooms and most of the infrastructure rooms. The base building and chalets were rebuilt be- tween 1998 and 2000. During this period, the older stone building, which dates from the 19th century and was part of a three-star hotel until 1998, underwent a complete ren- ovation. The opening of the resort in its cur- rent form and size took place at the end of 2000. In the summer of 2016, all the guest rooms underwent a minor renovation, all the bath- → 19PDF Image | A jewel in the Alps Geberit Riffelalp
