This became widely popular and web portals became the starting point of the user’s web browser experience. Since many web portals provided additional services such as email, news and entertainment in addition to search, people found themselves spending a lot of time in there. As the Internet continued to grow at a fast pace, the popularity of these early web portals and search engines started to decrease; people were looking for other pages of interest that existed away from these portals. And new approaches to search and find information began to develop. It was just not feasible to review full lists of results anymore, and it was the arrival of Google and its proprietary PageRank algorithm that would have the greatest impact on web search.
