FIRST WE EAT 4 Use Hashtags Effectively Have you noticed that if you start engaging with a specific type of account, you’ll start to see more posts within that vein on your instagram feed? That’s because the algorithm is using hashtags to determine the type of content that’s in the image. It uses other in- formation as well, like words within the image caption, but hashtags are key. Because of this, it’s incredibly important that you use hashtags that are relevant to the content of the image. Additionally: — Don’t use the exact same group of hashtags every time. Instagram considers this “spammy” and you’re much less likely for your image to show up in the feature portion of any of those hashtags. Using the same single hashtag is fine, especially if it’s your own brand, but it’s more using the exact same 18 hashtags on every photo that will set off the instagram spam sensor. — Leave your hashtags in the caption, not in the comment. Shadow- banning is real, and when I was using hashtags in comments on my photos I started getting shadow-banned. When I moved them to the caption, it stopped. Lesson learned! — Use a mix of big and small hashtags. When you use a hashtag that’s popular, there’s so many people posting to it that the chances of someone seeing your photo in the hashtag’s feed are much smaller. If you use a hashtag with a small but substantial amount of uses (say about 20,000 - 50,000), you have a much greater chance of people seeing your photo in the hashtag feed, and also a greater chance of being featured at the top of the hashtag, too.
