We determined a user’s group membership using corresponding APIs in Flickr and LiveJournal. On YouTube and Orkut, we determined a user’s groups by screen-scraping the HTML pages that contain the user’s profile. Note that since Flickr allows users to form private groups, we were unable to determine any information about the membership of such groups. 4.4 Capturing social networks’ growth We now describe the methodology for collecting information on the evolution of online social networks, and the data we collected.
