To exhaust the credit on specific links, attacking users would need both knowledge of the trust network topology and some control over trust path selection. Because the path selection is performed by the trusted site, the attacking users have the choice of only the destination and not the path. Even if we assume a powerful attacker who has control over the path selection, the trust network would need to have a topology that is susceptible to such an attack. For example, a barbell topology would be susceptible, as the link connecting the two halves of the network could be exhausted. Analysis of current online social networks (which are typical trust networks) shows that these have a very dense core [105]. We show in Section 8.4 that the structure of these networks makes it unlikely that such an attack would succeed on a large scale. 8.3 Discussion In this section, we discuss some issues associated with deploying Ostra. 8.3.1 Joining Ostra Fundamentally, Ostra exploits the trust relationships in an existing social network of users to thwart unwanted communication. As a result, users are expected to acquire and maintain a certain number of social links to be able to communicate.
