History Until 2012, “view count” was considered the best measure of success for video content on YouTube. Before 2012, a creator could upload a video with a spam title and racy thumbnail with the intention of increasing clicks. A video like this would receive a huge number of views, but low audience-retention and high bounce rate which would suggest that the viewers weren’t satisfied with the suggested search results. “View count” can also be open to abuse (click bait, paid views etc.) and getting on the front page was pretty much impossible as old videos were most likely to have high view counts. It wasn’t reactive to new, important news stories and instead was being cluttered with NSFW thumbnails. Overall, how much time a viewer stays to watch a video is a far better measure of the videos’ relevance. Hence the fact that since 2012, YouTube have altered their algorithm and quote a user’s “watch time” as being the primary metric to help push relevant and interesting content. One of the biggest goals of the YouTube algorithm is to prevent people “gaming” the system and having low quality content appearing high in search results. The interview with a YouTube employee on the right is worth a watch.
