What does “watch time” really mean? YouTube’s goal is to make people ‘watch more and click less’. According to the YouTube Creator/Brand Playbook, “YouTube optimizes search and discovery for videos that increase watch time on the site.” Watch time is not just a measure of how long, or what percentage of your video gets watched. It is a measure of how long the user’s SESSION on YouTube is. The question you need to ask is: Are people watching most of the video and more importantly, is it enticing them to watch more? Good examples given by ReelSEO are: ● If a user does a search on YouTube and then watches a series of videos with yours being the first - every video that is watched in that series (whether it's your video or someone else's), will be factored into the session watch-time for that content. If they immediately bail and go back to perform another search, watch time will suffer. ● This is also true if your content creates a new YouTube viewing session. For example, when an established YouTuber posts a new vid to their social media followers, their influence drives followers to YouTube to begin a viewing session and if those followers then watch other YouTube videos, watch time is positively influenced. Playlists are YouTube’s suggested way to allow you to collect, organize and publish multiple videos together. This increases watch time and creates another asset that will appear in search results and in Suggested Videos (otherwise you have to rely on the algorithm to make your videos appear). You can create playlists using your own videos, other videos, or a combination of both.
