New priorities were set when it came to how the bathrooms were fitted out. On the one hand, a lot more importance was attached to the showers, which were also given a lot more space. On the other hand, the bulky hot tubs – which were prone to technical problems – were replaced by regular, but generously sized bathtubs. For the first time, no bidets were installed, with all the WCs now equipped with a shower toilet in- stead. “Like Hans-Jörg Walther, I too am of the view that in a top-class hotel, the WC and bathroom have to be two separate rooms. For me, a comfortable shower toilet is simply a standard feature nowadays as well,” says Roman Mooser, who also in- stalled shower toilets at his home many years ago. A team you can count on When choosing the shower toilet, the hotel manager deliberately opted for the Aqua- Clean Sela. “On the one hand, I think that the Sela looks very elegant. On the other hand, it also doesn’t have too many func- tions,” he says. “When guests check in at our hotel, a member of our staff shows them to their room, where all the functions installed in the rooms are briefly explained to them – from the electrically adjustable curtains right through to the shower toilet. We therefore made sure that the technol- ogy needs as little explanation as possible.” The members of the hotel’s facility man- agement team quickly familiarised them- selves with the many technical innovations in the guest rooms and bathrooms. Unlike in an urban hotel, the management of the Riffelalp Resort relies on its own staff being able to remedy most malfunctions. To also be able to provide this support in the sani- tary facilities, facility management main- tains a comprehensive stock of spare parts and replacement units. This includes com- plete shower toilets, meaning a defective unit can quickly be replaced if the need arises. ← Three questions for Richard Gruber, owner of Richard Gruber AG in Zermatt A long-time customer Mr Gruber, how did you secure the contract for the recent bathroom renovations at the Riffelalp Resort? We already won the contract for the sanitary installations when the renovation was carried out and the new building was constructed in Riffelalp around 19 years ago, and the hotel has been a customer ever since. As we know the buildings’ sanitary facilities inside out, our calculations were spot on and our quotation for the recent bathroom renovations proved accurate. Did any special challenges have to be overcome when carrying out the installation work? Not really. In the old building section, we replaced the exposed cisterns with Geberit Monolith sanitary modules and then equipped these with AquaClean Sela shower toilets. Duofix installation elements were already installed in the WCs in the new, larger chalet section, and these did not need to be replaced. All that was needed here was for an electrician to sort out the power supply so that the shower toilets could be installed. We were able to leave a lot of the concealed installations as they were in the bathrooms as well, and only had to make the odd change here and there. Did you also have a say when it came to the design of the bathrooms? We put forward a couple of ideas and suggestions, such as the installation of Geberit CleanLine shower channels. In our opinion, they seemed per- fect for showers with large wall and floor tiles – and I think that the result shows that we were bang onthemoneyhere. ← 1 The Gornergrat railway is an electrically operated rack railway. It runs from Zermatt rail- way station (1,604 metres above sea level) to Gornergrat railway station (3,089 metres above sea level) and is the second-highest mountain railway in Europe after the Jungfrau railway. The line opened in 1898. 21
