Who is primed to take advantage of the algorithm? PewDiePie has hit on an algorithm goldmine (some by chance): ● Let’s Play videos have minimal editing and most of the talking is improvised reactions so they’re fairly easy and quick to produce. ● Not only are there numerous videos a week, but they’re 10/15/20 minutes long. Most users binge watch gaming videos and simply wait until the end of the week to make their way through a playlist as a serialised format. ● Long videos in long stretches are perfect for meeting the watch time metric (a format that only really works for gaming channels as long videos for other subject matter is considered at risk of being long winded). Lots of watch time = YouTube free promotion ● He’s international (and YouTube gives more weight to promoting channels locally). YouTube considers his channel Swedish as he started it there, but then he moved to Italy and gained a following there, while speaking English. He’s now living in Brighton, England (about to move yet again) and is promoted there. “Subscriber burn” However, it is possible to upload so regularly that you actually drive subscribers away which is known (by Game Theorists) as “subscriber burn.” If you are subscribed to a channel but do not watch new videos from that channel as they debut, YouTube’s algorithm will assume you are no longer interested in that channel’s videos and will instead suggest other content for you to watch. This causes issues for YouTubers who post frequently, as if a subscriber misses a few of these updates, YouTube will begin filtering out your NEW videos as they arrive as well. (PewDiePie had this issue at one point and it’s explained in this separate video.)
