Gornergrat Bahn to the Riffelalp

Arrival at Zermatt and taking the Gornergrat Bahn to the Riffelalp

When you arrive at Zermatt via Swiss Rail or Helicopter, you will be greeted by the Riffelalp porter (wearing a green shirt) who will guide you to the resort. The Riffelalp is located at 2222 up the Gornergrat, which means you need to take the cogwheel rail. You can request a rail ticket be provided (the resort will put the ticket on your room bill), or you can develop a better strategy to buy a Peak Pass to take full advantage of the Zermatt mountain transportation system. It can be pricey, but the best way to see all the mountains in the area.

Riffelalp Charges:

Standard Room with Breakfast:

Room: 380.00 CHF Tax: 3.00 CHF

Peak Pass: 250.00 CHF

Keycard: 5.00 CHF

Gornergrat Train Ticket One-Way: 24.00 CHF

Strategy: Buy your Peak Pass prior to going up to resort. You can buy a Peak Pass at the resort.

If you have any Swiss transport discounts (pass or half fare), you may pay less.

Gornergrat Summer Ticket Prices (most expensive season until end of August 2021):

Zermatt-Gornergrat Round Trip: 126.00 CHF

Zermatt-Riffelalp Round Trip: 56.00 CHF

Matterhorn Peak Pass: Value for all transportation in Zermatt including Gornergrat Bahn, cable cars, and more.

3-day: 259.00 CHF

4-day: 274.00 CHF

5-day: 319.00 CHF

3 out of 5 days: 271.00 CHF

Riffelalp Resort

I've been going to the Riffelalp Resort since 2005 and just love it. It is one of my favorite resorts in Europe and has the best mountain view of any resort in the world, of the iconic Matterhorn. The resort staff is just wonderful and always helpful. The best time to go is early or mid-September before they close for the fall. I typically go in July after the Tour de France, but it is generally a bit busy then. This is because it's when Europeans are on holiday. Late August and early September are less busy. As part of Covid protocol, masks are required (summer 2021) indoors. They are also required with any public transportation.

Live from Zermatt with Pepe

Live from Zermatt Switzerland 🇨🇭 with Pepe

Join us for a live update from Switzerland with our adopted Uncle Pepe.

Now that Europe is allowing Americans back in, Pepe is finally back on the road and this time travelling to our beloved Switzerland.

After a year and a half spent in the US, Pepe reported live from the same place we met back in 2019, the Riffelalp resort.

We talked about traveling to Europe as an American this summer, how busy things are, COVID measures across Switzerland, what he was enjoying most about being back and a lot more.

We even got the chance to enjoy the stunning views of the famous Matterhorn - a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy.

One thing is for sure, he did a great job making us miss home.

We’ll do this again soon so stay tuned and be sure to click the notification bell to get our next Live alert!
